I wrote this poem on the night of August 27, 2023. Earlier that evening, I went out to dinner with a friend, we talked about some of our trauma, forgiveness, and death. Sol is the name I chose for myself a long time ago as a way to call out to the earth, God, and myself.



This poem is an abstract reflection of that conversation, an ode to the tattoo I got most recently 'Like The Sun' and a documentation of my thoughts and memory.

My dear friend and creative partner, Artist Named You and I filmed the visual the following day, August 28, 2023. A majority of the footage was captured during a morning trip to the water — we returned that same evening to complete the shot list during a storm.

I leave names behind me
Do not mistake this for confusion
Do not mistake this for regret
But if you mistake it for anything
Mistake it for

I was named after honey
The world treated me as such

Our bodies are fragile
Is what they don’t teach you

To name yourself again and again
A gift that only you can give to yourself

I named this body after something
You cannot taste
Extract
Sell

In a world where I cannot face sun
I face these fragile bones
This finite flesh

Dust them in glitter
And pretend that I, too, am as important

Marked myself
I mean named myself

A reminder when I need to call out to god
A reminder when I need to

It’s raining and I’m drowning
But its okay

I learn so much
Everytime I save myself from these waters

The world isn’t honest
But its okay

We’re not given many chances to survive

I want you to survive
To name yourself when you need to

I forgive you
I want you to survive
